Abstract

Fisheries in India are an important sector of the Indian economy, contributing 1.07% of its GDP. The fisheries sector in India supports the livelihoods of over 28 million people in the country, particularly in coastal and vulnerable communities. India is the world's third-largest fish producer, accounting for 7.96% of global production, and the second-largest producer of fish through aquaculture after China. Total fish production in 2020–21 is estimated at 14.73 million metric tonnes. According to the National Fisheries Development Council, the fisheries industry generates export earnings of ₹334.41 billion. Centrally sponsored schemes are expected to boost exports by ₹1 lakh crore in FY5. Under these projects, 65,000 fishermen have been trained from 2017 to 2020. Freshwater fisheries constitute 55% of the total fish production.
