Abstract

Rock-filled concrete (RFC), developed in China by Prof. Feng Jin and his team, is mainly used for dams. Large rocks are placed first. High-performance self-compacting concrete (HSCC) is then poured from the top of the rock-filled lift and flows under its own weight into the spaces between them. This paper reviews how the materials act together and discusses rock, HSCC and composite properties, testing, quality control and validation with Indian materials. It also explains why HSCC requires performance beyond basic SCC test compliance. RFC has been used extensively in China for gravity and arch dams, with projects also reported outside China.
