Abstract

This research explores the intricate dynamics of overtime and its implications on productivity in the workplace, with a focus on the perspectives of senior managers in reputable organizations. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, commencing with an exploratory phase and transitioning into a descriptive research methodology to unravel the complexities surrounding overtime. The investigation reveals a dualistic relationship between overtime and productivity, as senior managers acknowledge both its positive contributions and negative consequences. While the majority perceives overtime as a catalyst for enhanced efficiency, concerns emerge about its potential drawbacks, such as social loafing and adverse effects on employee health. One prominent finding underscores that employees often engage in overtime not solely to augment productivity but primarily for personal financial gain, driven by enticing overtime incentives. However, this practice unveils a counterproductive side, as social loafing during regular hours becomes a compensatory mechanism for some employees. The study sheds light on the adverse impact of extended working hours on employee health and well-being, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that considers both productivity and employee welfare. Contrary to the assumption that long working hours lead to increased productivity, the research indicates a negative correlation, attributing heightened stress and tension to extended hours. Additionally, the research gauges the suitability of flexi timings in the Pakistani context, revealing managerial skepticism. Managers express reservations about the efficacy of flexible work arrangements, citing concerns about the motivation and diligence of the labor force in the absence of strict supervision. In conclusion, the findings accentuate the nuanced nature of the relationship between overtime and productivity, urging organizations to navigate these complexities judiciously. As businesses evolve their work practices, understanding the intricate dynamics of overtime and its consequences becomes paramount for fostering a healthy and sustainable work environment. This research contributes valuable insights for organizations seeking to strike a balance between maximizing productivity and prioritizing the well-being of their workforce.
